The thirty-second physics
A dry pot throws abrasive with compressed air, and every particle that shatters on the steel becomes airborne dust: visible plume, drifting grit, and respirable fines the federal silica rule exists to control. A wet rig injects the same abrasive into a water stream. The cut on the steel is the same; the shattered media and stripped coating get captured by water droplets and fall at the work instead of flying. The cloud never forms, which is not a refinement of dry blasting but a different answer to its main problem.
When wet wins outright
- Live surroundings: producing pads, running yards, occupied storefronts, and anywhere a drifting cloud would hit people, product, or intakes.
- Fire-sensitive sites: mills and wood-dust environments where any new airborne dust is a safety conversation, and dry grit sparks are unwelcome besides.
- Lighter containment: without a plume to tent against, containment shrinks to catching what falls, which is faster to rig and cheaper on the quote.
- Old-coating jobs: suspect lead-era paint still gets tested and handled by the rules, and wet suppression makes the containment side of a positive far more manageable.
When dry still makes sense
Honesty keeps this page useful: inside a dedicated blast booth with full recovery, dry abrasive recycles economically and freezing weather does not care about your water lines. Deep-winter outdoor work and booth production runs are dry blasting’s home turf. Around here, outdoors, in humidity, next to things that must keep working, the calendar and the geography vote wet almost all year.
The flash-rust step, because chemistry does not negotiate
- Blast wet to the spec and verify the profile with a gauge.
- Rinse with rust inhibitor while the surface is still fresh, buying days instead of hours before coating.
- Or prime the same visit when the coating plan allows, putting the first coat on inside the window.
- Write it down: standard achieved, profile reading, product applied. The coating crew inherits facts, not guesses.

What is wet sandblasting and how does it work?
Wet sandblasting drives abrasive media, garnet or crushed glass in our rig, inside a water stream instead of dry air. The abrasive still cuts rust, paint, and scale to bare metal at a paintable profile; the water encapsulates the dust as it forms, so the grit cloud that defines dry blasting never happens. Same result on the steel, radically different behavior in the air.
Does wet blasting get steel as clean as dry blasting?
Yes. The SSPC surface prep standards, SP 6 commercial, SP 10 near-white, describe the finished surface, not the method, and a wet rig reaches them the same way a dry pot does. We verify with a profile gauge and write the reading down, because coating warranties reference the number, not the technique.
Why does the OSHA silica rule favor wet blasting?
The federal respirable crystalline silica standard limits worker dust exposure, and abrasive blasting is one of its named concerns. Wet methods suppress the dust at the source, which is the control hierarchy’s preferred answer. Modern rigs also run silica-free media, garnet and glass, so the operator and everyone downwind get two layers of protection.
What is the catch with wet blasting?
Flash rust: wet-blasted steel starts damp, and bare damp steel in Louisiana air blooms within hours. The answer is discipline, not a different method: a rust-inhibitor rinse finishes every strip we run, or primer goes on the same visit when the coating plan allows. Handled that way, the catch disappears; skipped, it ruins the job.
